Discover the Hollywood Theatre: A Historic Landmark in Portland, Oregon

Located in the heart of Portland's Hollywood District, the Hollywood Theatre stands as a testament to the city's rich cinematic history. This iconic venue has been captivating audiences since its grand opening in 1926.

A Glimpse into Portland's Cinematic Heritage

Portland, Oregon, renowned for its vibrant arts scene, is home to numerous cultural landmarks. Among them, the Hollywood Theatre shines as a beacon for film enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Situated at 4122 NE Sandy Boulevard, this historic movie palace has played a pivotal role in the city's entertainment landscape.

The Birth and Evolution of the Hollywood Theatre

Designed by the esteemed architectural firm Bennes & Herzog, the Hollywood Theatre was commissioned by theater magnates Claude Jensen and John von Herberg. Its architectural grandeur features a Spanish Colonial Revival exterior, while the interior draws inspiration from the opulence of Roman structures like the Baths of Caracalla.

When it first opened its doors on July 17, 1926, the theater boasted a seating capacity of 1,500 and showcased both vaudeville performances and silent films. An advertisement from that era heralded it as a "palace of luxury, comfort and entertainment unsurpassed by any theatre on the Coast."

Throughout its storied history, the Hollywood Theatre has undergone several transformations:

  • 1961: Transitioned to a Cinerama theater, embracing the ultra-widescreen format to enhance the cinematic experience.

  • 1975: The auditorium was divided into three separate screening areas to accommodate a diverse film lineup.

  • 1997: The theater became a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving its historical significance and promoting film arts.

  • 2015: Reintroduced 70mm film projection, making it the only theater in Oregon equipped for this format.

Current Offerings and Programs

Today, the Hollywood Theatre curates a diverse array of programming that caters to all tastes:

  • New Releases and Classics: From contemporary blockbusters to timeless classics, the theater offers a rich selection of films.

  • Signature Series: Special themed screenings, including cult favorites, film festivals, and unique cinematic events.

  • Educational Initiatives: Workshops and lectures aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking.

In 2017, the Hollywood Theatre expanded its cultural footprint by acquiring Movie Madness, a renowned Portland video store housing an extensive collection of over 90,000 titles and notable film memorabilia.
